Deep Roots IN FERTILE SOIL
Over 30 years ago, Xprt’s President Daniel Sacks, took a summer job fixing computers at the local shop. His experience there would alter the course of his life, and foreshadow the successes that his company still enjoys to this day. While toiling in that dingey repair shop blowing dust out of computers and formatting disks, Daniel learned that people are far more important that machines.
With that knowledge and the skills he had amassed over years of tinkering with computers, Daniel set about creating his own computer business, but one that would situate people at its center. In 1994, Daniel and a business partner started Imaginative Computer Solutions in North Vancouver right out of high school, and began rewriting the story around how technology lands in front of users.
Affirmation did not take long to arrive, and when Daniel and his partner were selected as Young Entrepreneurs of the Year, the the were armed with ample confidence to pledge forth. They quickly grew a sizable list of clients, some of which remain valued partners of his more than 30 years later.
A CLEAR Focus on People
Technology is a dynamic force that relies on change as its vehicle, constantly searching out ways to escalate opportunity for users. The one factor that remains constant within the technological industries is its users. Humanity naturally derives technological solutions to meet the challenges we face, but we will always remain what we ultimately are: people in need of a hassle-free experience.
When Xprt Technology Solutions evolved into Xprt Integration in 2011, it was in pursuit of a growing market in home automation and integrated systems. The very reason that we moved in this direction was due to feedback from clients who found that their home systems failed them in various ways. When we explore the industry, we noticed that the user was hardly acknowledged by the home automation industry, and found user interfaces that had been created without almost any care or understanding of the home owners. Touchscreens were adorned with masculin, space-age graphics, and navigation around the controls was frequently a mindless jumble.
CRAFTING A User’S Experience
It was at this moment that we realized that our very entry into the automation market must surround solving the control means, and repairing the relationship between users and systems. A year later, we had developed Kubuni, our modular control app running on the iPad, that allowed us to redress and tailor experiences to a tee. Suddenly our perspective on the delivery of technology was changed forever. We quickly began to see that few others in our industry had realized the importance of managing the relationship between users and technology.Truly understanding this tenet and internalizing it within the approach to every project and task is how Xprt Integration maintains our grounding. We flat out refuse to sell or install hardware without first exploring how it will affect the people it’s provided for. Holding true to that focus makes Xprt quite different from our competition.
Design is a field that’s tied closely to technology due to its constant developmental struggle to solve problems for users. Design centers itself around problem solving, and as the discipline of User Experience (UX) design emerged
over the past couple decades, it became increasingly apparent how essential it is in delivering technology. Perhaps the best example is the creation of software itself - environments where people cast their attention, use their motor skills to enter and extract information, and hope to efficiently arrive at the solution they’re searching for. Unhumanely prepared software is a frustrating nightmare.
Committing to UX
Perhaps the primary example of how UX design can augment technical experiences is Video Conferencing. Among many other services, Xprt develops tailored video conferencing systems that rely upon industry standard VC platforms, like Zoom. However, our experiences situate these platforms behind the hood of our own evolved control platform, now called Kutano. By getting in between the user and the unbridled system, we can eliminate unneeded features, and create our own presentation of the features needed by a specific client. The result is a useful, fluid, and efficient experience with a powerful communications platform, and businesses are taking note.
